I am reviewing the movie Happy Gilmore, which was released on February 16, 1996. It is a sports comedy film directed by Dennis Dugan. The main character, “Happy”, is played by Adam Sandler. Adam Sandler stars in many movies and is a very funny character in every movie he stars in. I watched this movie many times, and I was so young the first time I watched it. I am not sure what I was thinking before watching the film. I do remember what I thought after, though.
The movie is about a hockey player who has never played golf. He ends up discovering his skill of driving the ball and hitting it far. In need of money, Happy decides to enter a tournament to try and earn some money so he can save his grandma’s house. Happy has a unique swing that helps him earn money in many golf tournaments. He is eventually able to raise enough money, but he encounters more problems than he thought. The main characters are Happy Gilmore, who is played by Adam Sandler, Chubbs Peterson, who is played by Carl Weathers, and Shooter McGavin, who is played by Christopher McDonald.
Happy Gilmore is a funny movie, but it also has some deeper themes like family, friendship, and identity. Happy works hard to save his grandmother’s house, showing how much he loves and appreciates her. Even though Happy doesn’t fit in with the golf crowd, he stays true to himself, and ends up bringing more people to the tournaments. His friendship with Chubb helps him become a better golfer and person all around. There are a lot of standout moments, like when he tries to fight Bob Baker, and when Shooter McGavin tries to cheat.
The visuals and sound are simple, but they go very well with the movie. The golf courses are shown nicely, and the video gives a vibe of when the movie came out. The film uses slow motion and close-ups of the ball during big moments like happy drives. There are not many special effects, but there are comedy scenes, like when Chubbs’ wooden hand gets broken by being driven over. The music in the movie is a lot of classic rock that matches Happy’s wild personality.
Happy is a hilarious and high-energy character. His comedy in the movie is spot on. The dialogue has a lot of funny one-liners that brighten the movie. There are also some emotional moments, like when Happy is with his grandmother and helps her. The dialogue works overall because it matches the characters’ personalities, it makes the movie feel genuine, and it has some emotional depth.
The film succeeds with its comedy and underdog story. With Adam Sandler’s humor, it perfectly fit his role as the scrappy hockey player who turned into a golfer. The side characters shown throughout the movie make it funny all throughout. The target audience is teens and adults who enjoy sports comedies. I recommend this movie to everyone and really enjoy it. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
