Thanks to the science department’s newest course, Science Research & Design, students at Bellows Free Academy now have more freedom in shaping their learning.
Led by Mrs. Magnan and Ms. Schlutius, the Science Research & Design class is a half-semester course that allows students to independently conduct research. “The idea behind this class is that students have the opportunity to learn by designing projects on a topic they’re interested in,” said Ms. Schlutius.
The two teachers got their inspiration for the course from other high schools around the nation that encourage student-led learning. “At an in-service talking about student voice, we realized we don’t have anything like it at BFA so it would be a good addition,” said Mrs. Magnan.
Earlier in the semester, students were taught the scientific research method through various experiments. For example, in a cookie experiment, students were taught how manipulating variables, such as butter temperature or egg quantity can affect the cookie’s outcome.
“We are trying to give students different examples of what experiments might look like so they can practice data collection,” said Ms. Schlutius.
After being introduced to scientific methods, students began designing their projects.
“I’m testing the efficiency of different nose designs on rockets. I started by building a wind tunnel to provide a closed environment for the rockets” said Nathaniel Friz-Trillo, a senior engaged in the class. “Mrs. Magnan and Ms. Schlutius are helping me out by providing me with the science department’s abundance of materials and budget.”
In this class, students also are provided opportunities to consult with alumni, such as Alyssa Kemp, a 2009 BFA graduate, to learn more both about the process of scientific research and that students can accomplish anything from anywhere.
“We’re bringing all these people who are doing really cool things who didn’t go to Yale or Harvard to show you can do a lot of cool science stuff regardless of where you go for college,” said Mrs. Magnan.
At the end of the semester, students will present their projects to the class. In the future, Mrs. Magnan and Ms. Schlutius plan to propose a district-wide science fair to allow students to display their work to a bigger crowd.
Through Science Research & Design, BFA is redefining what it means to learn science by putting students in charge and letting their curiosity lead the way.
“If you’re someone who wants to explore your passion in science, then this class is for you,” said Ms. Schlutius.
