This year, the St. Albans Steelers Football organization welcomed their new General Manager, Jessica Williams. Along with taking on this leadership role, Jessica is also a part of the board, bringing new ideas to enhance the program.
“As the GM I am, or try to be, the glue that holds the day to day operations during the season together,” Williams explained. “As a member of the board, I help with organizational items such as fundraising and planning.”
One significant change the organization has introduced this season is the Sports You app, replacing email and Facebook for communication. “The app is geared towards sports teams, but it was a learning curve for all of us, as we attempted to improve communications throughout all teams,” Williams said. This transition aims to make communication easier for everyone involved in the program.
Jessica’s connection to the Steelers runs deep, as her children played for the team for ten years. “My goal while being on the Steelers board is to give back to this team,” she said. “My kids spent ten years on the Steeler field between the two of them. This program has the best camaraderie I have seen in any of the sports my kids have participated in. It is truly a family atmosphere that my family was fortunate to be a part of, we all have many fond memories on that field and with that team. When I was asked to be the General Manager and a board member, it was my opportunity to give that feeling back to others. Everyone should be able to experience that.”
During and after the football season there are fundraisers. Fundraising is essential to ensure the Steelers can continue providing high-quality equipment and programs for youth football. “Meetings are held routinely and whenever issues and concerns arise that need decision making or planning,” Williams added.
In addition to her work with the Steelers, Jessica brings a wealth of relevant experience from her career and roles on other boards. “I have been in management and administrative roles in my career as a nurse, and have been on other boards previously, such as my elementary school alumni board,” she said. “The biggest challenge is learning the ins and outs, and details of what it takes to make an organization such as the Steelers successful.”
Jessica’s motivation to join the organization stems from her years of watching her children play on the Steelers field. She plans to remain involved with the team next year, continuing her efforts to support and improve the organization.
