The PLP Capstone Project is intended to begin junior year, and be completed senior year. During junior year (for the fall), students explore potential topics for the project, and develop questions. During spring of junior year, students research, discuss and identify what they would like to do with their advisor. For senior year, students officially begin executing the project of choice, documenting the process, and developing the final project and how it will be showcased.
Many students have differing opinions for the project as it was newly introduced last school year (2023-2024).
I interviewed Ms. Bristol and talked with her about the purpose and importance of the Capstone Project, and why it was created.
“… at the end of the day when we ask ourselves, well why, what is the point of asking them to do this task for a capstone project and it is to fulfill a product, to have an end product.” When asked why it is important and why we should start the project our junior and finish it our senior year, this is what she said: “It is mainly to finish off your entire school life, and show what you’ve learned by making a project based on something you’re interested in. I got involved with the PLP because I felt it needed to be better.” Ms. Bristol initially created this plan to give more meaning to the PLP learning and PLP completion, instead of just doing it because your advisory says it is “PLP week”.
I also interviewed a student beginning their project in their junior year. This anonymous student had a very strong opinion towards the project. The question asked was, what do you think about the PLP capstone project. “I think it’s not any better than what we had before. I think that out of the things it is asking us to do it isn’t something we should be writing about to submit to colleges,”. As the questions continued, the opinion they shared was very negative about the project. “I think people want to do it less now because it is a big project and you have to stick with the same thing for however long your high school experience is.”
The PLP Capstone Project is in its second year process, and this year the school will officially begin to see the first final products.
