Imagine how nice it would be to have a four day week in high school instead of five days, having a day to break up your week and allow for more time and rest. Having a four day school week would improve students academic performance and benefit their mental health and here is why.
A four day week schedule has been talked about among many school districts around the country, and has even taken effect at some schools. A four day week has been proven to reduce stress levels in students and improve their mental health overall. Having an extra day off can provide students with more time for relaxation, extracurriculars, and rest. A four day week schedule can also increase student engagement during school hours.
Some may argue that a four day week may slow academic performance, and also affect parents scheduling with students that need childcare. This could also affect the hours of school days making them longer due to the day off. The longer school days may cause students to lose interest and “burnout.” Another argument is that students may fall behind because of the lost academic day which could decrease their scoring in school. A study shows the students would especially fall behind in math with a four day schedule.
I believe that having a shortened school week would benefit a lot of students and give them more time for themselves, which you need when you’re a student. Many students fall behind on the crazy amount of homework because of all the other activities they have going on along with school as well. The seven periods, five days a week, for high school students is a lot for students to handle, with seven different classes you’re required to do work for. I believe a day off in the middle of the week would benefit students and could help them catch up if they’re falling behind in classes.
Around 2,100 schools in 900 districts across 25 states around the United States have a four day school week. This is an increase of 850% since the year 1999. I believe these numbers will increase a lot overtime. Overall this has been a big argument for a while amongst people. Some people think this idea would be beneficial for students’ learning and others think this would have a negative impact on students’ academic learning.
