Some people believe that the Freemasons are a secret society. Movies such as National Treasure, and The Da Vinci Code, have enhanced and glorified this myth.
Freemasonry is actually a way for men to live their lives. The three fundamental tenets of freemasonry are brotherly love, relief, and truth. John Boomhover, district deputy, Nick Walsh pass master, and Al Vanscoy master of Franklin lodge number 4 in St. Albans sat down with me to talk about how freemasonry has changed the way they interact with their community.
Whether you see Jon Boomhover coaching special needs hockey, volunteering in the community, or supporting his kids at their high school events, whatever he is doing can relate back to something he has learned in freemasonry. He joined the Freemasons in the year 2002 because he was looking for a moral direction in his life. “I was in my early 30s and I saw a coworker with a ring on that had the masonic symbol engraved on it. I asked what it was and began a conversation regarding what a mason is.”
Nick Walsh joined the masons about 15 years ago when he heard about it from a buddy of his that was a member. Later ,he would find out that his father was also a Mason. Nick, while being a mason, found himself finding more of his spiritually. Nick said, “I’m not that person who would dress formally. There are enough rituals that we do with God. Plus getting more messages like we normally do in church.” Nick stated that the Masons are very welcoming and the members are there for you. Nick’s words of advice, if curious about the Masons or about joining, are to actually talk to somebody mouth to mouth and don’t just believe what you read about the Freemasons
If you are curious about becoming a member, Nick recommended that you should first get in contact with your local lodge in your community. His top 2 things about being a member are becoming more spiritually and learning a lot with morality. Masons do a lot of charity which helps to bring people out of their shells. For young people there is a great deal to be gained from joining the Masons including morality and teachings, ethic,s and living a clean life. For more info contact a Mason today!
