Castlevania Circle of The Moon was my introduction to the Castlevania game series. Although I believe this was a terrible introduction, the game wasn’t entirely bad. You play as Nathan Graves going through Camilla’s castle to defeat Dracula and save Nathan’s master and adoptive father, Morris Baldwin. The game begins with Camilla resurrecting Dracula, when Nathan Graves, Hugh Baldwin, and Morris Baldwin storm in to attempt to stop them. You don’t learn much about Camilla except that she’s a vampire who wanted to resurrect Dracula and Nathan kills her in the end. She breaks the ground beneath Nathan and Hugh which sends them falling down deeper into the castle. Now with Nathan’s master and Hugh’s father kidnapped, they have to save him and stop Dracula.
In the game, you traverse the castle and defeat bosses along the way. This game series is known for its difficulty, and some people say this game may be the most difficult out of all the Castlevania games in the Metroidvania genre. This may be because that was my first Castlevania game, but that was definitely the hardest game in this genre. Out of all five Castlevania games I’ve played, this one has definitely been the hardest. The controls were a problem as well. In order to run, I had to double click the button to move which was very annoying when I was in a tough spot and couldn’t remember to. There are some other problems such as the whip, your primary weapon, and the character being slow but it’s still a playable game.
Add transition like: Another discrepancy is in the plotline of Hugh Baldwin’s also going through the castle with the same objective as you, but as you progress he becomes jealous of you. He thinks he should be the one to save Morris, since that’s his father. Nathan was also the one to inherit the Vampire Killer whip which Hugh believes should be his since he worked harder. While this trope isn’t uncommon in stories, I have yet to see another Castlevania game make a sibling rivalry plot.
For my final opinion, I’d say this game was alright. There were a lot of parts I hated about it, such as the mechanics and inconsistent plot points. I was going to run or the Dracula fight and how it was a bit too difficult. However, I still managed to enjoy going around the castle and fighting the bosses which is why I don’t completely hate it. I rate this game a 6/10.
