There are lots of dining options for people in the Franklin County community. There are not many, however, as tried and true as Mimmo’s Pizzeria and Restaurant in Saint Albans.
As you walk in, under the brick facade, you feel immediately immersed in the restaurant as you immediately have a view into the kitchen. You can see all the staff wearing their black Mimmo’s shirts, with cooks spinning dough up in the air. This open concept design, with all the pizza ovens and cooking stations in clear view of the front of the store, makes for an inviting atmosphere.
Once you are seated, you will be helped by a waitress wearing one of those aforementioned black shirts. Service is fast and helpful for the most part, but occasionally falters. Your drink will be refilled when necessary, and wait times are consistently short.
But on to the real stuff: first, your appetizers. While they have 8 different options, a number seem to be reheated fried foods, such as the calamari and mozzarella sticks, and while they are not bad, there are better options. The appetizer that seems unanimously decided to be the best is the garlic knots covered with cheese. They come with around 8 or 9 knots, enough for a table of four to all have a good portion, or for a few people to have a more sizable appetizer. What they are is essentially bread knots the size of tennis balls covered with some herbs, and a blanket of cheese covering.
Next, for the entrees, which is where Mimmos really hits its stride. They have a variety of entrees that are quality, covering most of the main Italian foods you could think of. Between pizza, pasta, salads, and sandwiches, they have 50 or more options for you to choose from.
Pizza, perhaps the most popular dish, is done well at Mimmo’s. Slices are light and carry less sauce than other slices, which I enjoy. They have any topping you would want, but the pizza is good enough not to require it. I have gotten just cheese pizza from Mimmo’s many a time and been satisfied with it. The crust is floury, charred, and soft, and occasionally leaves a weird feeling on your tongue. However, the pies are still good.
Pasta at Mimmo’s is also very good. I have one complaint, which is that they recently did away with being able to pick between lunch size and dinner size for your meal, meaning you have to pay for a serving far too big for one sitting. The pasta does taste good, and there are many options from classic spaghetti to baked ziti, and every other common pasta dish. One of my favorites is the penne alfredo, but due to that pricing change, you are paying 20 dollars for too much food, which often does not reheat well.
The rest of the food is just about average, nothing to die for. Salads, calzones, and sandwiches are all definitely on the menu, and there is nothing more exciting to say about them. In summary, Mimmo’s is a good option if you are looking for any type of Italian food. You will be filled up with carbs, served fairly quickly, and get a consistent meal every time you go. And this consistency is what makes Mimmo’s great. You will almost never have to wait at the door, which is another great thing about Mimmo’s. Overall, I score them an 8.5 out of 10.
