With a growing culinary scene, a river walk, and a vibrant downtown, Winooski, Vermont, marks all of the boxes for a trip destination.
Winooski is an Abenaki word translating to ‘where the wild onions grow.’ The name is fitting, because clusters of these bulb-shaped vegetables grew along the banks of the Winooski River. Today, visitors to the city can enjoy the river from the downtown’s river walk, an approximately half-mile stretch that runs adjacent to the water, offering vistas of not only the river but also historic mill buildings such as the Woolen Mill, a once prominent part of Winooski’s wool-making industry. The mill stands empty today, but other mill buildings have been redeveloped into housing and restaurants, such as vegan-eatery Pingala. Although the restaurant is technically in Burlington, it is located right across the bridge and is within walking distance from downtown Winooski.
Another restaurant in Winooski is Papa Frank’s Italian Restaurant, a neighborhood staple that serves homemade Italian favorites such as spaghetti and meatballs, baked ziti, and ravioli. Also on the menu at Papa Frank’s are pizzas, salads, hot subs, and calzones.
Craving a refresher or a sweet treat? Scout features curated coffee, homemade ice cream, and fresh-baked goodies such as doughnuts and croissants.
Winooski also hosts a farmer’s market outside the Champlain Mill on Sunday mornings from late May through mid-October, featuring locally-made goods, produce, honey, meat, and more. Occasional special events are also held in place of the farmer’s market such as French Heritage Day, Youth Vendor Day, and Onion Fest.
Though perhaps overshadowed by its powerhouse neighboring city to the south, Burlington, Winooski is also worth a visit for its eclectic offerings and vibrant, lively downtown.
