While on most Wednesdays here at BFA, students can be found getting help or doing homework during enrichment, but during enrichment B, you can find students scurrying to Mrs. Schubert’s GSA meetings, and now it includes the Social Justice Club!
But who is Mrs. Schubert? Mrs. Schubert is a wonderful teacher who’s been teaching math for 15 years! 9 years in the state of Hawaii and 6 years up here in Vermont. She teaches Algebra 1, Applied Math, Math Seminar, and sometimes Geometry.
Her motivation to help students in any way she can is what keeps her coming back every year, stating, “I love working with teens, they’re insightful, smart, funny. Teens are the future…” But when she’s not teaching math and helping build our nation’s youth, you can still find her serving our community.
She strives to make her classroom a welcoming place with supportive posters and snacks for anyone hungry. She loves to help the students in any way she can, even if it isn’t math-related. That’s why you can find her hosting our school’s GSA during enrichments!
GSA stands for Gender-Sexuality Alliance, formerly the Gay-Straight Alliance. This is a place where people with queer identities can meet other people and relate to them, talk about their feelings, and learn about the history and current events that affect the queer community.
GSA used to be hosted by social workers. Still, with them being very busy and unreliable with their scheduling, Mrs. Schubert stepped up to the challenge and started hosting the GSA, providing snacks and lessons for anyone who chose to attend. Now, she does it alongside Mrs. Pratt-Ham and hosts the Social Justice Club simultaneously.
Mrs. Schubert is an outstanding part of our committee. She hosts the GSA, the Social Justice Club, and helps out any student, and much, much more that we didn’t cover in this article.
