During a recent conversation, I had the privilege of speaking with LB Gunderson, a teacher at Bellows Free Academy, whose passion for running has shaped her life in lots of different ways. LB’s journey is very interesting and shows how a simple activity can become a lifelong hobby and interest for mental health, well-being, personal growth, and even professional development.
It all began during LB’s college years, a time that had new fears and pressures. “I didn’t start running until I was in college,” LB shared. “I met a friend my freshman year who was on the cross-country team at my college, and she told me that it was a great way to deal with stress.” This advice intrigued LB, and she decided to give it a go. LB recalled having to walk multiple times on her first run and struggling to complete just one mile. Over time, running for stress management and mental health turned into an activity that LB really started to enjoy and love. LB explained that while taking breaks might require rebuilding her fitness, LB will “always come back to running as a way to improve my mental health.” This dedication has led to impressive achievements, including completing marathon distances multiple times. What is super cool and interesting about LB and her running is that her perspective is not just to win. “I’ve always been very clear that I run for fun and mental health. I don’t consider myself a fast runner, but when I’m in running shape, I can run for distance. I look at running and racing as competing against myself and past times versus the people around me.”
LB’s commitment to a “slow and steady” approach to running has a noticeable effect on how she teaches. “I think the influence that running has on my teaching is to just stay slow and steady.” She explained. LB recognises the importance of allowing students their own pace, stating, “You have to have patience. You can want all of the things for your students, but you can’t do it for them.” Running has helped LB maintain composure and confidence, reminding her that preparation is key and striving for improvement each day is what really matters.
When asked about any memorable runs, she highlighted two significant experiences. The thrill of achieving a new personal record (PR) is always a special moment for her. LB vividly recalled her third marathon, where she “cut 27 minutes off my best time.” This accomplishment was very special for LB. Another deeply impactful run was a “very rainy 10 miler in April 2025.” Despite the challenging weather, LB managed to maintain a pace of less than 10 minutes per mile for the entire race. LB pointed out that running in the rain, even though it could be considered unpleasant, can be “really refreshing and fun if you prepare for it,” highlighting the importance of having the correct gear.
The path for LB has not been without obstacles. Injuries have tested her, and she learned the hard way, pushing through illness, stating, “I probably shouldn’t have run because it just made me sicker.” Despite these challenges, future goals are always important to LB, and she wants to eventually participate in ultramarathons and ambitious endurance events, demonstrating a continued drive for personal growth and pushing her limits.
